In case of severe weather
Follow these steps to keep your family connected and informed:
Know where to tune in for TV and radio weather alerts and news. You can also see active weather alerts by visiting the National Weather Service’s website.
Know the difference between a weather Watch, Warning and Emergency:
Watch — Conditions are favorable to the development of severe weather. Be aware.
Warning — Severe weather is imminent, or may already be happening, in your area.
Emergency — This is the newest and most serious alert level. A severe weather event has not only been confirmed, it has been deemed destructive and life-threatening.
Sign up for automated, lifesaving alerts that will push straight to your cell phone.
There are now many weather warning apps that you can download, including the Red Cross’ free Tornado app.
Your family should know where to go to meet, or how to get in touch with each other, if they are separated.
Know where your home’s emergency gas, water and power shut-offs are — and how to operate them.
